A brief overview on your Social Security Card


Every one of us wants to ensure an economically safe and secured life once we retire from our job, or perhaps it is a wise decision to take precautions in case we encounter any physical or mental disabilities which may reduce our regular income. For both the cases, we should be the part of social security system which will in turn secure our future to a greater extent.
Becoming a part to the social security system is rather easy: a person should apply for his/her social security card. In fact- social security number of the card is one of the most important identity for a citizen.




Eligibility:
You can apply for a social security card if you are 18 years of age and an US citizen. A non US citizen may apply for the card too if he/she has a valid non work reason.
Documents:
For requesting a social security card, you have to have proper documents to prove your age, identity, citizenship etc. therefore, the following documents are necessary-

·         To prove the age, birth certificate is needed to be submitted. If anyone doesn’t have his/her birth certificate, other documents like US birth hospital record, religious record etc. may also be accepted.
·         To prove the identity, document which contains legal name and several biographical information like date of birth or age, parents name etc. of the applicant is required. In general the driving license or passport is required for proving identity. In case of the unavailability of a driving license or passport- documents like military ID card, employee ID card, health insurance card, school ID card etc. may also be accepted.
·         To prove US citizenship- birth certificate or the passport is required. Certificate of citizenship, or the certificate of naturalization may also be accepted.
·         Documents issued by department of homeland security is required in case of proving immigration status.



Application Fee:  
The application is free of cost. You don’t have to pay any kind of hidden/non-hidden charges to apply for the social security card.
Time required to receive the social security card:
An applicant may receive his/her card within 10 business days from the day his/her application is processed.
Social security card replacement:
You may apply for a replacement for a lost social security card. In this case you should submit proper documents along with your application to validate your identity. For people born in USA, the driving license or passport is needed to be submitted. However, if anyone is born outside the USA, then he/she should submit proper documents validating his legal status in the country. In this case, documents issued by the department of homeland security is required to prove his/her legal status.
Application fee of replacement social security card:
The application is free of cost. You don’t have to pay any kind of hidden/non-hidden charges for the replacement social security card.
How to apply:
One may apply online for the new or a replacement social security card. If online application is not possible, then he/she may mail his application with all the required documents to a nearby social security office.
